BMW 2002 276913 Hardy
& Beck
Title:
Color: red, repainted in 2003
Mileage:
- 2020: around 200K
- 1988: around 85K
Original equipment: tii model, sunroof
History: construction started in 1978 with
Alpina West in California. Understanding is that there were three
cars built to this level by H&B. One is the car from the photo shoot
with the flares and 15inch rims. One is a Malaga car that is
believed to be in a collection in San Francisco (may have been in a fire and repaired).
Third is this car. (H&B worked on many 02’s during that time and so no doubt there were more but perhaps not at this level.)
The flared car is believed to be wrecked and repaired but it is not this car – the car driven by Boundarant in the article was/is a squarelight
car.
Main modifications from 1976 to 1990:
- Engine:
- 1988: stage 3 rebuilt, equivalent of A4S: new
block, Cam
300 degrees 10:1 forged, balanced, blueprinted, 46mm inlet valves
- 1978: stage 2 rebuild, equivalent as an Alpina A4.
- 1978: BMW 2002 limited slip unit @ 40% lockup installed by H&B in the mid 70s. This is described in the H&B receipt stack. Not an e21 LSD – I don’t recall the primary differences externally but there some key indicators that I validated several years ago (I have an e21 LSD on my other 02 as well making it easy to compare). I’ve confirmed differential gearing using rear wheel rotation compared to driveshaft rotation multiple times and all point to the 3.64 gearing.
- Borrani steel wheels
- 1976: Getrag 235/5 transmissions
- 380mm Momo/Alpina wheel,
- BMW 2002 Turbo vented brakes
- Quick ratio steering box (x177)
- Alpina/Bilstein “Green dot” struts
- Alpina sway bars
- Gauges
- Seats and fabric
- Cibie light
- The large red round piece (mounted on the bumper) is a combination driving light (lightly on when headlights are on), and a bright brake light (all conditions).
- And more.
